While Resveratrol has always been available in most red wines, it was never identified as the key ingredient to what makes red wine so beneficial to our health. Its popularity began when scientists wanted to decipher the ‘French Paradox.’ The French Paradox is a term used to describe how the French, who are a society that consumes a lot of saturated fats, have such a low rate of cardiovascular problems. Originally it was believed to be the consumption of red wine that allowed for this to happen, but more recently scientists discovered that these effects were more likely caused by the Resveratrol in the wine. The amount of Resveratrol in grapes is relative to many factors including weather and organic nature. Harsher climates actually produce higher levels of Resveratrol suggesting that this is the anti-stress chemical produced by the plant to make it more resilient under adverse conditions.
